Heartfield is perhaps best known for his anti-Nazi and anti-Hitler
propaganda montages, produced from 1930 to 1945. His work exposed
the true
intentions of the Nazi party, laying false to the claim that
"we did not know", pertaining to Hitler's plans for the
Jews.
When Hitler came to power in Germany in 1933, Heartfield was forced
into exile. He lived in Prague, and continued to contribute to A-I-Z.
In 1938, the Czechoslovakia government was pressured to extradite
him, so he fled to England, where he continued to produce work until,
ironically, he was interned as an enemy for his German ancestry.
He was released shortly due to his ill health.
From 1950 until his death in 1968, Heartfield lived in East Berlin,
where he was honoured for his work and his contributions to the
struggle.
